Lauren Greutman of LaurenGreutman.com here to show you how to shop for Halloween costumes on a budget. Halloween is such a fun time of year but with the gift-buying season fast approaching, you may not want to spend a lot of cash on costumes. If you’re looking for a frugal way to celebrate Halloween with your kids, I have three creative costume ideas that can be made for less than $7 each! The best part? They take less than 30 minutes to create!
The first step is to check Flipp for the best deals on all your craft supplies. I found items that inspired me to create a unicorn, a troll, and a cowboy costume from just scanning deals listed on Flipp for my local dollar store flyer.
All the items came from my local dollar store for $1 each. Check out everything you need to re-create the costumes for your family below.
DIY Unicorn Costume
- Feather boa
- Set of fairy wings
- Temporary hair color
- Nail decal gems (found in nail aisle)
- Makeup Set
- Fake eyelashes (you only need the glue to put the gems on)
- Toilet paper roll
- White washi tape or colored tape
To make the feather wings, tear the feathers off the boa and hot glue them onto your fairy wings.
To create the unicorn horn, cut an old toilet paper roll in half lengthwise, and form into a cone shape. Wrap with tape (I used white washi tape from my craft bin) and some string or wire, then use a hot glue gun to secure the horn to the headband.
I used the makeup palette to create a magical look, and glue from the eyelash set was perfect to secure the nail gems around the face. I brushed in the temporary hair color to finish off the costume.
The total cost of this costume was $7 and it took 30 minutes to create from start to finish!
DIY Troll Costume
- Tulle tutus (2)
I started by cutting the tulle tutus apart, and into small rectangles. Once I had them cut, I tied the rectangles around the headband.
I alternated colors when tying these onto the headband and secured together at the top with the remaining trim that I cut off the skirts.
To dress my little troll, I got out my own makeup bag and used lipstick on her cheeks and nose, as well as eyeshadow, eyeliner, and blush. She wore a leotard that we had from her dance class, and she looked adorable.
This costume cost $3 and took 15 minutes to create.
DIY Cowboy Costume
This Cowboy Costume is adorable and only $4. The best part is that it took only 5 minutes to put together!
- Cowboy hat
- Dish towel
Start with a plain colored shirt and jeans to support the costume. The vest can easily be made with a $1 dish towel.
Lay the towel flat and fold in half.
Cut out a circle along the folded edge for the neck, and cut up the middle of the towel to make it a vest. Cut fringe on the bottom and you have yourself an adorable vest to complete the look!
By using the Flipp App, I easily found everything I needed to inspire my Halloween costume ideas. These adorable costumes can be put together in under 30 minutes for less than $7 each!
