Make a plan. Make a To-Do list for each room and plan your attack one room at a time to help minimize the stress of a never-ending cleaning session.
Donate, donate, donate! There’s no better way to begin decluttering than by deciding what items you want to get rid of. Instead of tossing them out, find a local community center or shelter that accepts donations.
Check your tools. Clean out the central vac canister. Make sure you have everything you need. Check that you have cleaners, wash cloths, and pads for your Swiffers! Missing something? Keep an eye on the deals on Flipp to snag your favorite products when they go on sale.
Keep old toothbrushes! They are great for cleaning out all the nooks and crannies including around the taps, window sills, baseboards, sink drains— the possibilities are endless! Be sure to sanitize between uses.
Make it a game! If you have children or grandchildren, purchase dusting mitts and give everyone a pair. Have a contest to see who can find the most dust. The kids always win because they are closer to the floor! Award prizes for the dustiest mitts or the most pairs of dusty mitts! Ultimately everyone wins!
Create a caddy. Use plastic bins as caddies to hold everything you need. When you move room to room, carry your caddy to save time!
Work with the weather. Wait for an overcast day and to wash your windows. Direct sun may dry the cleanser before you can wipe it off, leaving streaks. Use vertical strokes on one side of a window and horizontal ones on the other — this way, when you spot a streak, you'll know which side it's on. As for dusting, wait for a sunny day, when particles will be easier to see.
Load up the dishwasher! Use your dishwasher for more than just your dishes. Put a load of plastic toys, light fixtures or even bathroom items (such as toothbrush holders, soap dishes and small garbage cans) in the dishwasher to give them a good disinfection!
Freshen up the place. Complete the clean by tucking a few dryer sheets in drawers or closets after washing blankets and towels to keep them smelling fresh. It also works with stinky shoes— just shove a dryer sheet into shoes to repel odor.
